In order to get the minority status Educational Trusts and Societies will be required to get themselves registered as NGOs with the NITI Aayog, without taking into consideration their desire of receiving government aid or not.

For the purpose of registration as an NGO with NITI Aayog, the NGO will have to put all the financial transactions of the trust and all the crucial details of like Pan and Aadhaar Card of all the members will be required for enrolment.

The Schools and Colleges availing minority status will enjoy the benefits of Reservation and limited Government interference.

The National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions (NCMEI) has clarified that the Educational Institutions run by individuals will not be eligible for the minority status.

The NITI Aayog Portal Darpan will provide a unique id to the Trust/Society on its enrolment.

The commission will continue to hear the already running cases but it will provide the Minority Status Certificate only after the Unique Id is provided by the petitioner.

In the last year the government had made it mandatory for NGOs to get itself registered with NITI Aayog portal in order to get the eligibility for apply grant from any ministry.

However the Trusts and NGOs not seeking government aids were not required to comply with the above mentioned requirements.

The constitution of India gives a fundamental right to the minority sector for establishing and administering educational institution of their choice.

A society or trust which consists members of minority community or even a single member may establish such an institution.
